Division I recruited student-athletes are required to provide access to their SAT scores to determine eligibility per NCAA guidelines.

During the 2017-18 admissions cycle, 21% of admitted students submitted ACT scores.

There will be no minimum GPAs, similar to test-optional policies in use by Christopher Newport University, George Mason University or Virginia Commonwealth University.

Applicants will be entirely free to decide whether they want to include test scores along with their applications.

“We’re providing applicants to Madison the opportunity to build their best application which could include test results, recommendation, or personal statement,” explained Joe Manning, JMU’s Associate Dean of Admission.

“We’ve determined that our students’ high school curriculum is a more consistent indicator of their academic success.” As the university works to update their website to reflect the change in policy, information on the application process for the coming year has been communicated during on-campus information sessions, including one for counselors last month.For the evidence-based reading and writing section, 50% of students admitted to James Madison scored between 570 and 650, while 25% scored below 570 and 25% scored above 650.On the math section, 50% of admitted students scored between 550 and 640, while 25% scored below 550 and 25% scored above 640. Students may submit their SAT scores if they believe they will add to their application.And JMU is joining an impressive group of colleges and universities that have made the decision to reduce the role of scores in admissions.According to the nonprofit National Center for Fair and Open Testing (Fair Test), the list of test-optional schools has grown to more than 950 accredited institutions awarding bachelor’s degrees, with more than 275 highly “ranked” in their “tiers” by , including such familiar names as Bowdoin, Mount Holyoke, Pitzer, Smith, Trinity College, Wesleyan, Wake Forest, Providence and College of the Holy Cross.With the exception of recruited student-athletes, James Madison University does not require applicants to submit SAT or ACT scores for admission.Students may opt to submit SAT/ACT scores if they believe it will strengthen their application.During the 2017-18 admissions cycle, James Madison University had an acceptance rate of 71%.This means that for every 100 students who applied, 71 students were admitted, making James Madison's admissions process somewhat less competitive.James Madison offers 74 undergraduate degree programs with majors in business being the most popular.JMU has a high retention and graduation rate compared to similar public universities, and the school frequently ranks well nationally for both value and academic quality.
